T.C. Boyle paints a world in the fierce grip of climate change, set maybe 50 years in the future and still all too familiar, with people desperately clinging to a way of life disappearing before their eyes.

The story takes place in two different regions of the US, the Florida coast slowly inundated by rising sea levels and California scorched by relentless heat.

The cast of characters mainly consists of average, middle-class Americans who struggle to preserve their habitual way of life against all odds.

It's a bleak story with few moments of hope and relief but it is highly prophetic considering the way things are going. Yet the author is not trying to be didactic but sympathizes with his characters caught up in a situation beyond their control, which makes the story all the more lifelike and moving.
